T he potential of mining the seabed for polymetallic nodules has been suggested for several decades and in the past couple of years a number of companies have sourced funding and investment to develop technology capable of mining the seabed or have been trying to secure prospecting areas. The demand for minerals to supply to the battery storage and electrical vehicle market was touted as the catalyst for making this ideal a reality.
