摘要

Abstract A method for photogrammetric counts of Pacific salmon using consumer-grade unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has been developed. It is based on estimation of the abundance of spawners and spawning redds by photogrammetric processing of aerial images taken with UAVs at monitoring sites and analysis of photogrammetric products (orthomosaics and digital elevation models, DEMs) in geographic information systems (GIS). The estimates of relative abundance for the monitoring sites are extrapolated to the area of watercourses of the respective basin suitable for spawning grounds to calculate the total abundance. It has been shown for the first time that DEMs of the watercourse bottom allow visualization and counting of redds. The components of the method are described in detail: work planning, photography, data processing, fish abundance estimation, data analysis and visualization, and web-publication. Recommendations for choosing a UAV, its accessories, and software for flight, photogrammetry, and GIS are provided. This approach will contribute to the objectivity of salmon counts and provide gradual transition from subjective aerovisual abundance estimation methods towards a provable and verifiable digital basis.
