Ban on crackers during Diwali made the government triumphant; thereby black-marketing of crackers made the retailers exultant; collection of a penalty of Rs. 2000/- for bursting fire cracker made the police department jubilant; limited expenses on crackers made the parents blissful and yet bursting crackers made the children joyful!! Diwali indeed brings about happiness for almost everyone. All this when everyone is aware of the hazards of fire crackers. Their chemical reaction releases smoke and gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen, and these are some of the primary greenhouse gases responsible for climate change. The recent climate data from the UN weather agency suggest that world could see average global temperatures 1.5 degrees higher in the next five years.
