Even years prior to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, economic and workplace issues had surfaced within pediatric ophthalmology. The pandemic and post-mitigation only exacerbated existing economic challenges. In this issue, Thuma et al analyze the responses to a 14-question survey communicated to United States-based pediatric ophthalmologists through several social media outlets. A substantial number of pediatric ophthalmologists reported a decrease in clinical and surgical revenue and overall income. Fifteen respondents said they limited the number of Medicaid patients, and 26 planned to retire earlier than anticipated. Future studies will demonstrate a further deterioration in the economic and workplace issues that will continue to plague and worsen the financial stability of pediatric ophthalmology.
