In 1939 he started at the Royal Infirmary, Liverpool, as surgical tutor. He joined the army as a surgical specialist and spent three years in Burma, India, and Palestine. He returned in 1946 and took up the post of consultant surgeon to Sefton General Hospital. Soon afterwards he joined the staff of the Northern and Runcorn hospitals. He retired aged 70, and, after the death of his wife, Margaret, in 1990, he moved to Wiltshire, where, although not a man of many hobbies, he took great delight in his garden.
