Four winners have been announced in the 2021 NIOSH Mine Safety and Health Technology Innovations Awards, recognizing operations in four mining industry sectors: industrial minerals; coal; metal; and stone, sand and gravel. Through the awards, NIOSH's Mining Program recognizes organizations that have made an extraordinary effort to apply technology or improve processes in innovative ways, above and beyond mandatory requirements, to improve mine worker safety and health. In the industrial minerals category, Imerys Performance Minerals Americas-North American Division was recognized for introducing contact-tracing wearable badge technology to manage social distancing and track exposures to COVID-19 at worksites.
