In an interview, Ron Beck, Marketing Strategy Director at Aspen Technology (AspenTech) highlighted how oil and gas companies, which account for 42% of carbon emissions worldwide, can use digital technology to achieve sustainability goals. For example, oil and gas firms must monitor water use during upstream operations. Beck used the UAE's state-owned Abu Dhabi National Oil Co.'s use of a digital twin as a management tool in order to determine how operating decisions impact energy and water use, carbon emissions, etc. In addition, artificial intelligence-based prescriptive maintenance will also optimize production field operations and will reduce incidents. A major Alberta-based oil sands operator and US independent ConocoPhillips have both used AspenTech's advanced process control to improve the efficiency of heavy oil production. In addition, Beck believes that key performance indicators include safe operations, operational metrics, and executive metrics.
