As a multimethodological approach, digital documentation integrates 3D scanning, photogram-metry, videography, photography, virtual tour captures using 360-degree techniques, changes over time, oral history captures, and digitized archival data to make a more holistic view of a site.16 These elements combine to generate integrated models and interactive platforms that can be used for myriad purposes such as conservation and preservation planning, diagnostic tests, historic interpretation, and educational public his- tory projects. Furthermore, the products of digital documentation yield digital heritage, defined by UNESCO as the whole of "computer-based materials of enduring value that should be kept for future generations," that can be more widely circulated and studied.17 Although digital documentation facilitates the remote exploration of sites, it is not intended to be a surrogate to on-site experience. The multifaceted aspects of an integrated digital model also evoke Kevin Lynch's "temporal collage": captured data of historic sites can leverage augmented analysis tools within computational technology; researchers and preserva- tion professionals can digitally deconstruct and reassemble a project to understand construction techniques, or decode the physical properties or fresco layers on the wall of an ancient site without invasive contact.18 Previously immeasurable variations can be studied to better understand structural behavior and the impacts of climate change. But digital documentation also yields opportunities beyond the materiality of a building: through a digital model synthesized with archival data, a fingerprint in a brick can be associated with a larger story about labor practices and design agency.
