Scientists claim to have developed a solution which can significantly reduce CO_2 emissions in cement and quicklime production. The Decarbonate project, led by the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, involved developing a test kiln that uses low-emission electricity instead of combustion for decomposing calcium carbonate, which is a central part of cement production.
