The complete description of the Fe-Ni-Cr-Si-B system and subsystems can simplify and accelerate the development of Fe-based brazing foils. These Fe-based amorphous brazing foils for joining steel offer considerable advantages over conventionally used filler metals. Amorphous brazing foils are flexible and can be easily adapted to the component geometry with stamping or cutting. Furthermore, Fe-based amorphous brazing foils are much cheaper than the conventionally used Ni-based amorphous brazing foils. In this study, samples with a defined chemical composition are prepared and analyzed by DSC-measurements (differential scanning calorimetry) to complete the knowledge of the Fe-Ni-Cr-Si-B system. This allows to create a precise CALPHAD database and thus the identification of quinary Fe-based alloy systems with the highest glass forming ability (GFA). Based on these results, simulations can be used to predict alloy systems with high GFA and suitable compositions. In order to describe the alloying-system Fe-Ni-Cr- Si-B completely, the missing data of the ternary systems Fe-Ni-Si and Ni-Cr-B needs to be added. Different phases and melting points of the ternary system can be identified by using DSC-measurement and microstructural analysis. Developing these novel Fe-based brazing foils opens up new possibilities for cost-effective coating. In addition, base material-like properties with regard to mechanical and corrosive properties can be evoked. The results will complete the knowledge of the Fe-Ni-Cr-Si-B system, which is the essential prerequisite for the advancement of modern Fe-based filler metal.
