The durable goods manufacturing index improved in May as compared to April by 1.0%, and it was ahead of year-ago levels by 26.0% according to the U.S. Federal Reserve. The increase in May was driven by a 6.7% gain in motor vehicles and parts output with assemblies improving by about 1 million units to 9.9 million. Still, motor vehicle assemblies were about 1 million units below the second-half 2020 average monthly output.The largest durable goods manufacturing sector output gains in May, besides motor vehicles and parts, were in computers and electronic products (1.6%) and furniture and related products (1.5%). Fabricated metal products and machinery manufacturing gained 0.6% and 0.8%, respectively.
