This paper presents a technique for estimating the thermal balance that determines the optimum design of compact pulsed lasers with diode pumping and no liquid cooling. Data are presented from tests of a laser developed using the proposed technique, which lases in the single-pulse regime at a pulse-repetition rate of 10 sec~(-1) with a mean energy per pulse of more than 10 mJ.
