A proposal to extract 936,000 tonnes of sand and gravel from continuation of and an extension to Gonsal quarry, near Shrewsbury, has been refused by Shropshire Council, against planning officers' advice. The council concluded that a requirement in the development plan for a new access to the A49 avoiding Condover village had not been met and the proposals would, therefore, result in an unacceptable continuation of large quarry HGV movements through Condover village and conservation area and would have a corresponding adverse impact on local amenity.
