Following the controversial and narrow approval of a contract extension by members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (1AM) on January 3, Boeing decided to assemble the 777X series at Everett, in Snohomish County, Washington. Everett personnel will also build the carbon-fiber-reinforced composite plastic wing of the 777X. Nestled 22mi (35km) north of Seattle in the wooded suburb of Everett is Boeing's sprawling factory, a place so massive, technologically sophisticated, and vital to the world's airline business, it's hard to wrap your head around it. What began as the birthplace of the world's first wide-body airliner, the 747, is the site where more than half of the world's twin-aisles have been produced. Of 7,228 wide-bodies built by the end of 2013 by Airbus, Boeing, llyushin, Lockheed, and McDonnell Douglas, 3,818 were 'born' at Everett. All 747s, 767s, and 777s have been built here, and nearly every 787 Dreamliner (a second line is in Charleston, South Carolina).
