IT COULD HAVE BEEN just another 'deregulation knockout': one of the many airlines created after passage of the Airline Deregulation Act in 1978 that managed to stay in business for a few months or a few years, only to close down after failing to make a financial go of it. But America West (HP) succeeded. Founded by ex-Bonanza Air Lines exec Edward Beauvais, the company's first Boeing 737 flight took to the air on August 1, 1983. With a primary hub at Sky Harbor Airport (PHX) in Phoenix, and a secondary hub at Las Vegas (LAS), the airline was dispatching flights to 34 airports by the end of 1986.
