摘要

The Gorgo a Cerbara section (central Italy), which encompasses the transition between the Maiolica and Marne a Fucoidi formations and includes the Barremian/Aptian boundary was proposed as a Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) candidate for defining the base of the Aptian Stage with the base of the reverse magnetochron CMOr as the primary marker. Recently, the use of the base of magnetochron CMOr as a datum to define the Barremian/Aptian boundary has been questioned and an alternative interpretation of the bio-, litho- and chemostratigraphic markers of this stratigraphic succession proposed. A revised highresolution planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphy is presented here for the upper Barremian-upper Aptian stratigraphic succession at Gorgo a Cerbara. This succession is 38.13 m in thickness and approximately 8.8 to 12.6 Myr in duration, and has a refined lithostratigraphy that enables accurate reassessment of the stratigraphic position of the litho- , magneto- , and biostratigraphic units and the major biotic and abiotic events recorded throughout the section. In particular, the recovery of planktonic foraminifera successfully disaggregated from the hard lithologies allows the identification and precise placement of several primary and secondary bioevents including, in stratigraphic order: 1) the lowest occurrence (LO) of Leupoldina cabri; 2) the LO of Globigerinelloides ferreolensis; 3) the highest occurrence (HO) of L. cabri; 4) the LO of Globigerinelloides algerianus; 5) the LO of Globigerinelloides barri; 6) the LO of Hedbergella trocoidea; 7) the LO of Pseudoplanomalina cheniourensis; 8) the HO of Globigerinelloides algerianus; and 9) the LO of Paraticinella rohri. Moreover, this succession of bioevents allows the subdivision of the late Barremian-middle late Aptian into the Globigerinelloides aptiensis, L. cabri, G. ferreolensis, G. algerianus, H. trocoidea and P. rohri planktonic foraminiferal Zones, with the Barremian/Aptian boundary probably near the top of the G. aptiensis Zone. Based on these observations and other recent findings on Early Cretaceous planktonic foraminifera, an updated version of the planktonic foraminiferal zonation for the Lower Cretaceous is proposed. This refined biostratigraphic framework may provide an invaluable tool for improving Early Cretaceous correlations at low to middle latitudes, as well as paleoenvironmental, paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic interpretations.
