The larynx, also referred to as the voice box, consists of a series of cartilage plates that form a box in the throat1. It closes off the trachea (windpipe) to prevent food and drink from entering the lungs. The integrity of the larynx is maintained by the laryngeal muscles. Laryngeal paralysis occurs due to weakening or paralysis of these muscles, which, in turn, causes the cartilages to collapse inwards.
