A public inquiry into plans for an underground coal mine near Whitehaven on the Cumbrian coast is under way. Under the inquiry, which began on 7 September and is set to last four weeks, the planning inspectorate will consider West Cumbria Mining's (WCM) application for the £l60m Woodhouse Colliery project. Since 2014, WCM has been working to develop the mine, but its proposals have been dogged by controversy and earlier this year, the government called in the planning application despite twice refusing to do previously.
