Christmas! The sound of jingling bells and the smell of pine and cinnamon in the air. The festive period is a time of fun and frivolity, but the number of hazards within homes increases significantly during this time, so it is imperative that residents are aware and have adequate fire and carbon monoxide (CO) detection. As the days draw shorter and the temperature drops, for many of us, that means turning the heating on to warm the home through those chilly evenings and frosty mornings. CO is a deadly and poisonous gas that is emitted by fuelburning appliances when incomplete combustion occurs. Annually in the UK, statistics indicate approximately 4,000[1] instances of carbon monoxide poisoning with 200 cases resulting in hospitalisation[2], with around 60 being fatal and approximately 10-15 per cent of those with severe CO poisoning developing long-term complications[1]. Being odourless, colourless and tasteless, CO poisoning is also known as the silent killer making adequate protection through CO alarms vital.
