This paper investigates the performance analysis of RS-coded and un-coded coherent M-QAM modulated OFDM free space optical communication system. The system performance is analyzed using block error rate. Mathematical expressions are derived for the average block error rate under the combined effects of attenuation loss, pointing error, and gamma-gamma distributed atmospheric turbulence, and results are validated using Monte Carlo simulation. M-QAM modulated OFDM system with RS codes enhances the system performance more than an un-coded system. Coherent OFDM-FSO improves the system performance by overcoming the effects of atmospheric factors.
