As environmental concerns grow, every aircraft will have to be recycled for its components and materials. That is far from the case today but some companies are striving to recover as much as they can from an airframe and its equipment. Ultimately, OEMs will have to include recyclability in their design drivers, just as they have long integrated maintainability. The trend toward recycling becoming the norm also means it may be the next topic on ICAO's agenda. If one region mandates exhaustive recovery of an aircraft's elements, it could have the unintended effect of persuading fleet owners to send their assets to regions where cheaper practices are allowed, such as dismantling for landfill. To avoid this, harmonized regulation and global standards may be needed.
