I agree with Scott et al. that Choosing Wisely has been an important trigger for increasing the academic attention paid to low-value care. But it is important to look beyond the volume of articles to recognize that to date, unfortunately, the quality of work on this topic has been highly variable, with only 17% of studies containing a control group. My hope in writing about Choosing Wisely a decade after its inception was to advocate for further evolution in this field. We need more rigorous research -and real-world interventions such as those highlighted by Levinson et al. as well as by Baron and Wolfson - if we hope to make progress in reducing low-value care.
