New York-Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technologies are being adopted "far too slowly" to achieve existing global net-zero commitments and must grow 120 times by 2050 to meet those goals, according to a new study by McKinsey & Co. The report, "Scaling the CCUS Industry to Achieve Net-Zero Emissions," finds that CCUS has the potential to decarbonize 45% of remaining emissions from carbon-intensive industries, but CCUS adoption will need to grow 120-fold by 2050, at a cost of $130-billion a year - more than governments are willing or able to afford alone.
