Since the vast majority of air and electrical lines are still dealt with from the catwalk, it is important for operators to make this activity as safe as possible. The official guidance, HSE publication HSG136 - A guide to workplace transport safety, simply states: "There should be safe access to the 'fifth wheel' (the area behind the cab, where the trailer connects to the tractor unit), for example steps, a handrail and a suitable platform that provides good grip. This area should be kept clean and clear to make slipping or tripping less likely."
