Abstract The increased demand for solar energy-based applications including photovoltaics, thermophotovoltaics, and other solar harvesting devices has generated a high demand for solar absorbers absorbing solar energy over the whole solar spectrum compared to the largely available narrowband and multiband solar absorbers. A solar absorber using a slotted resonator of Zirconium (Zr) over the Titanium (Ti) ground plane is presented. The proposed structure is analyzed in the 0.5–3 µm bandwidth to study its absorptance characteristics and ideal properties by analyzing the characteristics of absorptance, transmittance, reflectance, and electric field scattering, absorptance under solar radiation, different polarization, and angle of incidences. The absorptance values of 99%, 97.23%, 95%, 96%, 96%, and 96% are observed at 0.52 µm, 0.82 µm, 1.2 µm, 1.63 µm, 2.09 µm, and 2.65 µm, sequentially. The overall 2450 nm bandwidth is observed with 90% absorption and the 1260 nm bandwidth is observed with 95% absorption. The simulation results demonstrate six near-unity absorptance modes. The absorptance bandwidth spectrum is optimized by varying the parameter of the proposed structure. In addition, the solar absorber achieved the best angle of incidence insensitivity for Transverse Electric (TE) and Transverse Magnetic (TM) polarizations modes. The proposed absorber with its high performance which is compared with available broadband absorbers to show its higher performance can be applied for a vast range of applications related to solar energy harvesting.
