The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has certified a series of upgrades to the twin-engine Pratt & Whitney Canada PW210A-powered Leonardo Helicopters AW169. EASA approved the upgrades on Dec. 22, updating its records to reflect the changes on Jan. 12. The Leonardo upgrades, which were first revealed in January 2020, are available in "Enhanced" and "Superior" packages, and include power, transmission, software and airframe modifications designed to increase the performance of the medium twin helicopter. The two packages offer differing levels of performance; engine power, for example, is increased by 90 shp (66 kW) with the "Enhanced" package and 130 shp (95 kW) with "Superior," from a baseline of 874 shp (652 kW). Depending on the package, the AW169's payload capacity is expected to increase to 661-772 lb (300-350 kg) in hover-out-of-ground-effect (HOGE) conditions. EASA first certified the AW169 in July 2015.
