When atopic eczema (atopic dermatitis) remains very troublesome despite assiduous application of emollients or a topical cortico-steroid of suitable strength, an immunosuppressant is sometimes an option. Oral cictosporin has been authorised in France for use in this situation since the late 1990s, and it is often the drug of first choice, despite its limitations: short-term efficacy and gradual recurrence of symptoms after treatment discontinuation. It mainly carries a risk of nephrotoxicity, hypertension and neurological disorders (tremor, ataxia, confusion, seizures, etc.) (1-5).
