The reliance on spectroscopic data alone (conform with library spectra) might be a source of questionable results or misinterpretation in microplastic studies. Such a possible bias was reported about nonpolymeric additives from gloves that could contaminate the samples and would be characterized as polyethylene (PE), despite their different chemical compositions: "long-chain compounds such as stearates or fatty acids, which were falsely identified as PE by the applied analytical methods."
