Dubbed "jaw-droppingly inconsistent" and "desperately disappointing", the government's decision to effectively give the green light to the UK's first deep coal mine in 30 years in the same year the UK hosts the UN COP26 climate talks elicited a furious reaction from the environmental sector. The Woodhouse Colliery would be located at Whitehaven in Cumbria, and would predominantly mine coal from under the sea, with a new processing facility on the former Marchon chemical works. The coal is "high volatile coal", the highest grade of metallurgical or coking coal, used for steelmaking. It would be shipped to UK plants, or those in the EU.
