Fear is a fundamental, adaptive defense mechanism that cannot be eliminated, but it can be managed. Perceptions of vulnerability can be reduced by learning about threats and what can be done to mitigate them. By engaging in action, we can become resilient. Unfortunately, fear does not motivate preparedness in the majority of people (22). However, trust can motivate people to act in times of uncertainty. It also can help people reconnect after a traumatic or overwhelming event.
