When Tony Douglas took the helm at Abu Dhabi-based Etihad, the mission was clear and grave: Find a way to survive. Etihad's equity partnership strategy with airlines like airberlin and Alitalia had sunk the company into deep debt. But the surgical cuts that followed also put Etihad in a stronger position than many when the pandemic sliced across the industry. The company posted its best-ever quarterly profit in Q1 2022 and is highly focused on leveraging a simplified fleet and a raft of sustainability initiatives.
