The Chicago Botanic Garden recently opened a beautiful outdoor display of bonsai in the Regenstein Center's Searle and Runnells Courtyards. From May through October the Garden's priceless collection of 180 bonsai trees is rotated in the zen-like courtyards to be shown at their peak. Each tree rests on a granite bench with a frosted glass backdrop; edge lighting illuminates the trees at night. Granite pavers create a ground plane much like a rug and four polished black granite infinity fountains anchor the courtyard corners. As is customary in formal bonsai display, a smaller plant or object often shares the bench with the bonsai. Up to 50 bonsai can be displayed at one time in the two courtyards.
