Orders received by the German machine tool industry in the third quarter of 2021 were 69% up on the previous year's figure, with orders from Germany rising by 67% while foreign orders were 71% higher. Orders received by German manufacturers in the first three quarters of the year increased by 61%, of which domestic and foreign orders were greater by 47% and 69% respectively. Wilfried Schafer, executive director of the Frankfurt-based VDW (German Machine Tool Builders' Association), said: "While the levels of orders on hand are good, supply bottlenecks and sharp rises in the price of raw materials and components are increasingly holding back business. Orders are expected to continue rising in the coming months, being driven by catch-up effects that will continue for quite some time. "However, it may not always be possible to translate the orders into sales as hoped, as the machines can only be delivered with delays due to a lack of parts - especially electronic components.
