A journal bearing which is used in large rotating machines is composed of a large number of pads. This paper presents a method of analyzing its performance and the bearing characteristics for the 24 pads example arc made clear. The following are the major conclusions. (1) The pad of the bearing is approximated to a slider bearing with a parabolic surface. The slider bearing performance is calculated as the function of the ratio of the oil film thickness at a pivot point to the parabolic crown. (2) The optimum preload factor which gives the maximum load exist near 0.98 for the 24 pads example. (3) Results are displayed in dimensionless form so as to be utilised for design data.
