Coventry-based GF Machining Solutions Ltd (www.gfms.com/uk) - a provider of EDM machines, three- and five-axis machining centres, laser-based machines and automation systems - has recently introduced 'new innovations' into its latest wire-cut EDM machines. Comprising Intelligent Spark Protection System (ISPS), iWire, Uniqua and TurboTech, these features have been designed to deliver increased flexibility, speed, accuracy, performance and efficiency - and reduced wire consumption. With the new ISPS module, sparks are analysed and the parameters of the machine adjusted accordingly - in real time - to prevent wire breakage and maintain an optimised cutting speed. The process, which is 'automatic and effective', eliminates downtime and process interruptions. The iWire process helps to optimise and reduce wire consumption and is of particular benefit when individual workpieces to be machined present big variations in height or when the upper and lower heads cannot be placed close to the surface of the workpiece. The iWire module wire spool adjusts and optimizes unwinding speeds by 'the real-time assessment of wire wear according to cutting conditions', resulting in wire consumption rates being cut by up to 40%.
