Using a Virtual Community of Practice Activity to Build SBAR Communication Skills: Strong communication among health care teams is an essential component of client safety. Although nursing programs integrate communication techniques across curricula, opportunities for students to practice communication and receive structured feedback are limited. Scenarios created to practice communication in simulated learning experiences often lack the robust contextual factors from layer four of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing's Clinical Judgment Measurement Model (NCJMM). Opportunities to practice standardized communication in clinical settings depend on census, acuity, and availability to participate in interdisciplinary exchanges. To demonstrate competency consistent with The Essentials (American Association of College of Nursing, 2021) and to develop the cognitive functions of the NCJMM (Dickison et al., 2019), additional communication skill building is needed. Recognizing the need for increased practice opportunities to strengthen Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation (SBAR) communication skills and the benefit of feedback and reflection within a community of peer support, a virtual community of practice activity was developed for a medical-surgical nursing course in a master's entry-to-practice nursing program in the southeastern United States.
