It is hard to believe that late in the Fifties-half a century ago-passenger shipping ruled the roost and airlines played second fiddle when it came to international travel. At the time, if you took a walk down Fifth Avenue, New York, shipping line sales and ticket offices were very much in evidence. Major newspapers had shipping editors who reported faithfully on the comings and goings of liners belonging to such companies as Cunard, French Line (Compagnie Generate Transatlantique), Italia Line (Italia di Navigazione), Swedish American Line (Svenska Amerika Linien), Holland America, and Norwegian America (Den Norske Amerikalinje), while each day The New York Times dutifully chronicled the arrivals and departures of the rich and famous, even sending reporters out on the pilot's launch to interview arriving celebrities.
