WHEN THE 114TH CONGRESS PASSED H.R. 636, the FAA Extension, Safety, and Security Act of 2016 that included what is now known as BasicMed, the door was opened for pilots to be able to self-assess their medical fitness to fly without the onerous oversight of the FAA regulatory medical bureaucracy. However, one part of the language in the congressional legislation that the FAA used to draft the BasicMed regulations creates some confusion regarding duration of the physical examination using the Comprehensive Medical Examination Checklist (CMEC).
