2020-21 Preliminary Survey Results:According to the 2020-21 Winter Loss Survey conducted in Manitoba, the preliminary estimate of the average percent losses in operations with 50 or more colonies was estimated to be 15.4%, which is better survival than I anticipated. I had 44 commercial beekeepers respond to this year's survey sent out via email, which was also suppose to be available online. Unfortunately, I was not able to get approval to release the survey online by the June 18th deadline for the "Preliminary report on Honey Bee Wintering Losses in Canada (2021)". published by the Canadian Association of Professional Apiculturists (CAPA). Hopefully the online survey will be approved before the Final Report on National Wintering Losses is released in mid-July. As it stands right now,the average losses in Manitoba for commercial colonies wintered indoors was estimated to be 17.4% and outdoors 13.2%. Regardless, anytime winter losses are below 20% would be considered a good winter survival. Typically winter losses in Manitoba fall somewhere between 15% - 25% with 15% being on the low side of the normal range for losses.
