THE three Qs of colostrum management - quality, quantity and quickly - were key messages from a workshop presented to an enthusiastic group of dairyfarmers at Warrnambool, Vic, earlier this year. The farmers were evaluating the pilot of a new HealthyCalves Workshop, being presented by Dr Jamie McNeal on behalf of Dairy Australia, assisted by Ash Michael of the Victorian Department of Primary Industries. The workshop focused mainly on colostrum and health management in newborn calves. It takes calvesabout a month before their own immune systems begin to function, and they rely on immunoglobulins found in colostrum to provide immunity to disease in their first weeks. Getting colostrum management right is a giant step towards ensuring calves remain disease-free.
