Beyond the COVID 19 pandemic, returning to 'normal' should not be the objective; rather, we should be considering how emerging from the pandemic can lead to new opportunities and improvements in the short and long-term. In fact, during the pandemic, efforts to develop more renewable energy, in particular solar and wind, have continued but the link between these renewables and potential role of hydropower is not yet fully appreciated and warrants further consideration. The author examines the immediate response to the pandemic in terms of health and safety and strategies to assist stakeholders in these difficult times. The pandemic is then considered in relation to another crisis, climate change, and how emerging from the pandemic will require new strategies and priorities in relation to investments and Statkraft stakeholders. The theme of setting sustainable targets is examined in the context of new requirements, and to reflect the regional theme of this issue, examples are taken from Statkraft's South American projects.
