The Coal Authority (CA) is composting reed bed cuttings from mine water treatment schemes as part of a zero waste drive. Previously the reed beds, which are used in the mine water treatment process to filter out residual ochre, were disposed of in landfill when they needed to be replaced. Now these materials, comprising reed cuttings and ochre residues from the Bates mine water treatment scheme near Blyth in Northumberland, have been sent to a nearby farm. On one project, 1,594 tonnes of the material was spread across 50 hectares of farmland to provide cover and enrich the soil.
