South Asia, containing about one-fourth of the world's population within its 5 million km~2 or about 3.5% of global landmass, remains one of the most geopolitically sensitive areas. The region is a reservoir of poor, some of the world's neediest in terms of literacy, well-being and health, gender inequality, and most importantly, energy. A steady and secure supply of energy, as simple as the provision of just the one electric bulb per household, has the potential to turn this region around, enabling children to study at home, women to move about safely, protecting the environment from forest degradation to meet fuelwood demands, and allowing the families to cook healthy food to meet their nutrition deficiencies.
