Functional data are common in many fields like chemometrics, climatology, genomics, medicine and seismology. Data from such systems may have information about the system that generated the data. It may be worthwhile attempting to extract information from functional data about the underlying system. Functional data analysis has emerged as a useful area and considerable progress is made in extracting information from such data (Ref. 1). This study focuses on the one-way ANOVA problem with functional responses (Ref. 2). However, this problem has not received adequate attention of researchers. Problems related to regression, clustering and classification have been subjected to various studies. The example that motivated this study is the detection of stable ischemic hearts, that is, hearts without symptoms. The problem is to find stable ischemic hearts and normal hearts from ECG signals. Physicians usually focus on a subinterval of the readings such as the ST interval when studying readings. This results in the loss of information about the underlying system. Due to variation between subjects, the information may be masked. For those with stable ischemic hearts, disturbances in the signals may be less than the noise. In other words, two groups cannot be differentiated with reduced data. In such cases, clinics recommend further stress tests which cannot be carried out on patients who are vulnerable to heart attacks. The question is whether more information can be derived if all available data are used. (Ref. 1) proposed the squared-root F_(max) as the test statistic for this purpose and has higher power when within function correlation is high or moderate. This article studies the asymptotic level and power of the F_(max)-test.
