In the present market conditions and the new environmental legislations for ocean going vessels, the efficient management of shipboard operations is a major area of concern .Garbage management which has been overlooked previously has been in the spotlight for a while now. Many examples have already demonstrated that unsatisfactory waste handling and even illegal dumping take place in many ports around the world due to inefficient waste management operations, lack of control, recovery systems and inefficient information flow. Disposal to sea is not always possible due to restrictions imposed by MARPOL 73/78 and other marine pollution control instruments. Effective management of garbage is critical for ships that operate in areas where disposal is restricted or totally prohibited. Thus ensuring environmental concerns are correctly identified and necessary steps taken to prevent the degradation of environment by shipboard operations.
