Singapore lies off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. It left the federation of Malaysia and became an independent country in 1965. In the years that followed, the city-state enjoyed remarkable economic growth, from which the Swiss ropeway manufacturer Von Roll also benefitted: Von Roll was awarded the contract for a bicable gondola lift linking the mainland with the resort island of Sentosa. The installation - the Singapore Cable Car-was inaugurated on February 15, 1974 and was one of the most remarkable ropeways built by Von Roll. In a 1974 number of ISR, the installation is described (in German) as follows (see Fig. 1).
