摘要

Reflected shock wave causes severer damage in the form of spallation, crushing, and cratering of structural concrete components under contact explosions than close-range explosions. In this study, the state of research on the performance of the columns under close-in and contact explosions is presented. The Beirut-explosion (August-2020) was an accidental event of highest immenseness the world ever witnessed. Two of the five Beirut hospitals were severely damaged by the shock waves and the masonry walls as far as 2 km from the explosion site were smashed to the ground. On the Beirut-explosion, a brief case study of post-explosion damage scenario is presented highlighting the vulnerability of structures in the vicinity of explosive stores and ammunition depots. Observed damages to columns subjected to explosive loadings are due to failure in the form of flexure-shear, flexural, rupture of steel bars, scabbing and spalling of concrete. Lastly, certain considerations for future studies are proposed.
