Despite advances in diagnostic schedules and rating scales, doubts remain concerning the usefulness of the current classification system in psychiatry, with recent critical attention focused on depression, neurosis and personality disorders, as well as on the system in general. Such doubts have encouraged the development of improved instruments, a concentration on symptoms rather than on syndromes, and more widespread use of behavioural measures such as task performance and assessment of facial activity.
