摘要

Spinal fusion is a common strategy used in spinal surgery for a variety of indications. Fusion techniques and materials continue to evolve with time and technological advancements. The use of fusion in the spondylolisthesis population has been extensively yet incompletely examined. The lack of a useful classification system makes comparing across studies difficult. Review of some of the early data from the SLIP II study demonstrates variability in surgeon recommendations due to patient and surgeon-related factors. Examination of patient heterogeneity and the influence of this heterogeneity on the recommendation for fusion is in progress with the intent to develop a rigorous, valid, and useful system to guide the recommendation for fusion in this patient population.
