Securing a load, particularly on an open-deck trailer, can present unique circumstances and complex challenges. Vehicle operators and others responsible for securing a payload must first understand federal regulations and then how these apply to their vehicles cargo. They must also possess a basic understanding of the cargo's shape, weight, geometric form and how physical forces will impose themselves once the load is moving. An error in judgement, calculation or securement methodology can mean citations, CSA points accumulation or an out-of-service violation. The biggest concern is a cargo securement failure that results in a catastrophic accident or the loss of the cargo that the securement was meant to protect.
